Tilak Varma Strong Case for Test Cricket After Duleep Trophy Knock

Tilak Varma

Tilak Varma strengthened his case for Test cricket with another composed innings in the Duleep Trophy semifinal against North Zone. After scoring an unbeaten 116 in the first innings, the South Zone captain followed it with 51 not out from 79 balls to guide his team to a seven-wicket victory in Bengaluru.

South were chasing 181 after taking a first-innings lead, but the chase became difficult when they slipped from 64/0 to 102/3. Tilak arrived after Shaik Rasheed was dismissed and immediately focused on keeping the innings under control.

His batting showed the patience required in red-ball cricket. Tilak took 28 balls to reach double figures while facing regular short-ball deliveries from Gurnoor Brar. Abid Mushtaq also posed a threat with his spin, but the captain resisted unnecessary risks and waited for scoring opportunities.

The on-drive was one of Tilak’s most productive shots, bringing him 15 runs through three boundaries. Once settled, he expanded his stroke range, reverse-sweeping Mushtaq for four before using a paddle sweep to find another boundary.

R Smaran provided valuable support at the other end. The 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season’s leading run-scorer remained unbeaten on 32 and increased the scoring rate as the chase progressed. His partnership with Tilak produced an unbroken 80-run fourth-wicket stand and took South to the final.

The performance also highlighted the different demands of Tilak Varma’s red-ball batting. His unbeaten 116 in the first innings came after South were reduced to 80/5, requiring him to rebuild the innings. The 51 in the chase called for a more controlled approach with wickets in hand.

The semifinal adds to the growing interest around Tilak Varma in Test cricket. His two innings in Bengaluru showed that he can adjust his batting to different match situations rather than relying only on his attacking white-ball game.

With a first-class average of 55, Tilak Varma’s strong case for Test cricket now has another notable performance behind it. His contribution helped South reach the final while giving selectors another example of his ability to handle longer-format cricket.
