Rejection has a way of testing the strongest spirits. For Mark Blocker, four relentless months of job rejections after college weren’t just discouraging, they were defining. After pouring time and effort into earning a degree in Healthcare Administration from the University of Phoenix, Mark faced closed doors and unanswered applications. But sometimes, when life doesn’t go as planned, it pushes you toward something even greater.

Born in Alamogordo, New Mexico into a military family and raised in Macomb County, Michigan, Mark was no stranger to discipline, resilience, and perseverance. The youngest of six children, he was a natural athlete, playing football at the college level, basketball until 10th grade, baseball until age 12, and running track throughout his school years. Sports shaped his work ethic, but it was adversity that refined his purpose.

While working at a local McDonald’s and feeling the weight of repeated rejections, a former college football teammate reached out with a suggestion that would change everything, start his own business. Initially doubtful of his own potential, Mark hesitated. But after more fruitless job searches, he made a decision that would reshape his path. He founded Big Block Athletics, a name that reflects not just his nickname but his strength in pushing forward when life pushed back.

Today, Mark stands as a powerful example of turning setbacks into stepping stones, proving that sometimes the hardest moments lead to the most meaningful victories.

Leading with Authenticity on a Global Stage

To Mark, being a globally admirable leader in business today means consistently doing the right thing and prioritizing the well-being of employees. He believes that true admiration comes not only from professional success but also from the genuine care a leader shows for their people.

During a classroom exercise, his teacher asked him to bury the word “can’t,” both literally and metaphorically. She then told him something he never forgot: that he was more than capable of achieving whatever he set his mind to.

That simple affirmation became the foundation of Mark’s belief system. It instilled in him the drive to pursue success in everything he undertook, no matter the odds. Today, that early experience still influences how he leads. For Mark, running a business isn’t just about present-day hurdles; it’s about believing in the vision of what’s possible tomorrow. His decisions are guided by an unshakable belief: possibility always outweighs limitation.

In 2017, Mark took a bold step to sponsor a rugby team, despite his company being in its early stages. It was a decision driven by ambition and community spirit. However, the situation soon tested his leadership when the team’s director began to impose unreasonable demands, using pressure tactics that bordered on bullying.

Navigating the conflict required Mark to strike a delicate balance, asserting himself while maintaining a professional demeanor. Rather than backing down or responding emotionally, he stood firm, upheld his values, and protected his business interests. This experience became a turning point in his leadership journey.

Through that challenge, Mark learned a vital lesson: the importance of standing up for oneself without compromising professionalism. This skill has since proven essential in steering through other high-pressure situations, reinforcing his confidence and clarity as a leader.

Empowering Teams Through Trust and Leadership by Example

Mark fosters a culture of innovation and risk-taking by grounding his leadership style in trust. He firmly believes that the tone and standard he sets as a leader will either make or break the team.

Sponsoring the Rugby Team Amid Backlash

Mark recalled a time when he had to make an unpopular decision, choosing to sponsor a local rugby team. While his intentions were rooted in community support, the move wasn’t well-received by everyone. One individual in particular took offense and launched a personal campaign against him, filing complaints with the Better Business Bureau and posting negative reviews online.

Despite the initial backlash, Mark didn’t retreat. Instead, he focused on damage control, taking accountability and managing the situation with transparency and professionalism. Over time, he was able to turn things around and recover from the experience. The ordeal not only tested his resilience but also reaffirmed his belief in standing by the choices he makes, especially when they align with his values.
