After completing advanced training in Neurosurgery, Dr. Roopesh Kumar returned to Chennai to begin his professional journey in a private organization. Driven by a vision to contribute to public healthcare, he sought opportunities within government institutions and applied to several places. During this process, he discovered that JIPMER, despite its long-standing reputation, lacked a neurosurgical department. At the time, patients requiring neurosurgical care were referred to Chennai from Pondicherry, which concerned the then health minister deeply.

The minister intended to establish a neurosurgery department at JIPMER. By circumstance and determination, Dr. Kumar’s application was accepted, leading him to join the institute.

The early days presented considerable challenges. Being part of a government institution involved extensive procedural requirements and paperwork, especially since neurosurgical facilities were minimal. Establishing the department required training doctors, nurses, and paramedics from the ground up. With the support of general surgeons, Dr. Roopesh developed operating theatres, neurosurgical intensive care units, and wards. Through persistence and collaboration, the department evolved steadily and emerged as one of the most respected neurosurgical centres.
