Dr. Fredina Usher-Weems: When a Childhood Decision Became a Life’s Purpose

Dr. Fredina Usher-Weems

How Dr. Fredina transformed early family experiences with illness into a career built around helping women navigate life with strength and balance!

People often wait for a health scare before they change the way they live. By then, the warning may already have come in the form of a diagnosis, lost confidence, or the gradual loss of energy needed to enjoy everyday life. Dr. Fredina Usher-Weems understood that connection early, because she saw it happening around her.

On her mother’s side of the family, there was obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Her father’s side dealt with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and self-insecurities. As a child, Fredina watched illnesses overpower the will and desire of people she loved to pursue their dreams and goals and enjoy life. She did not want that story repeated in her own family. She made up her mind that she and her two sisters would choose a different way of living.

She was only 12 when that decision began to take shape. At her parents’ own daycare, Fredina became a fitness instructor, bringing the children together every morning for fun fitness activities. What may have looked like a simple childhood role carried a much bigger lesson for her: movement could become part of life before health problems made it necessary.

Years later, that childhood lesson would become part of Fredina’s leadership in the health and wellness industry. Her work grew from something she had witnessed firsthand: the cost of allowing poor health to take over a person’s life. The purpose that began with protecting her own family eventually became a commitment to help others build healthier lives while they still have the opportunity to pursue the dreams that matter to them.

A Vision for Stronger Women

As her career developed, the purpose behind that childhood decision grew into a wider vision. Her past, present and future vision has been to be an agent of change, helping women strengthen their self-confidence and gain the internal power to stay balanced during life’s challenges.

The focus on women comes from her belief that confidence and balance can change the way a person handles what life brings. Health, for her, involves the whole person and the strength needed to keep moving when circumstances become difficult.

The Principle of Being Your Best

For Fredina, leadership begins with the way a person sees and accepts themselves. Her leadership philosophy and the principles guiding her personal and professional choices can be summed up in one idea: “simply be the best me possible.”

Her approach to health and wellbeing comes from the belief that people are “fearfully and wonderfully made.” She believes people were given individual gifts and talents that they can use, and that those gifts do not need to look like the gifts of people they admire, love or appreciate.

Instead of unsuccessfully trying to become someone else, Fredina encourages self-acceptance, self-love and self-respect. Her message is to use what each person has been given and “simply be the best you possibly can.” That principle also determines how she measures her own work.

When Leadership Comes Back as Feedback

Fredina sees meaningful business success through something that can be felt as much as measured. Successful, satisfying and meaningful leadership, she says, is visible through one’s inner peace and humble yet prideful recognition of personal and professional accomplishments.

She also finds confirmation through inspirational feedback from clients, viewers, fans and mentors. When a leader receives healthy feedback, Fredina believes it shows that their labour has been seen in the lives they touched yesterday, today and in future generations.

For her, professional accomplishment becomes meaningful when it leaves something behind in other people’s lives.

Keeping an Open Mind as Things Change

Working in health and wellness also means working in an environment that keeps changing. Fredina approaches innovation, new ideas, technology and changing approaches with an energetic, competitive and teachable spirit, using them to create value and drive organisational growth.

She accepts that society will continue to bring future twists and turns. Adaptability has therefore become part of her approach, while she remains rooted in faith and determined to proclaim health and wellbeing. Her willingness to learn has become particularly important when working in an industry facing constant change.

Staying Steady Through Healthcare Change

Healthcare brings its own challenges, from changing conditions to the healthy and unhealthy choices people make about their wellbeing. These evolving challenges have motivated Fredina to stay rooted and determined to live an active lifestyle, continue seeking health and wellness information, and help and inspire others to do the same.

For her, staying active and informed is part of responding to change. It keeps her connected to the very issues her work seeks to address.

Building Teams Through Adaptability

When it comes to building teams, Fredina places adaptability at the centre of how she attracts, develops, empowers and retains talented professionals.

She chooses to interact with others in a nonjudgmental way, while allowing people the right to express themselves. She does this in humility while remaining true to her own self-identity.

For her, that creates an atmosphere of collaboration rather than isolation. When people are given room to be themselves while working towards shared goals, she believes it brings about a win-win environment.

Growing While Staying Flexible

Organisational growth also brings practical decisions about quality, consistency and long-term sustainability. Fredina manages that balance by staying flexible while continuing to pursue her family business dreams and goals.

At the same time, she understands that life brings changes within the economy and healthcare system. Social and behavioural needs also change, requiring the business plan to remain updated while she watches the direction of the economy, finance, health and family planning.

For Fredina, flexibility allows the business to respond to what is changing while keeping its larger goals in sight.

The Promise and Risk of Personalised Technology

Technology is set to play a growing role in health and wellness, and Fredina sees hyper-personalisation as an emerging development likely to have a major influence over the next decade. She expects consumer devices to link with AI platforms to build custom nutrition and recovery programmes.

The potential benefit is more relevant guidance, with suggestions aligned to a person’s baseline, goals and real-world constraints such as time, food preferences and training schedules.

Fredina also sees a serious risk. Constant optimisation through macros, weigh-ins and recovery scores could amplify anxiety or unhealthy restriction for some people, creating a risk of disordered behaviours.

For her, the value of technology will depend partly on how responsibly people use it.

A Thoughtful Approach to Decisions

The decisions Fredina makes as a leader require her to consider risk, opportunity, people and long-term objectives at the same time. Her approach begins with her spiritual practices, including seeking God and prayer.

She focuses on the need or issue, remains nonjudgmental, removes her own goals from the centre of the decision, uses cognitive thinking, and checks the resources and information available.

At the heart of that process is the need to enhance other people’s lives in a way that collaborates with their goals within a healthy environment.

Her decision-making therefore remains closely connected to the people affected by the outcome.

Learning When to Say No

Some of Fredina’s most important leadership lessons came through the challenge of setting boundaries. Through God’s mercy and grace, she says she was transformed into the leader she is today by learning how to say “NO.”

For years, she had been the go-to person for family, friends, in-laws and the community. People could call “Dr. Fredina” whenever they needed motivation, encouragement, inspiration or even a chauffeur.

She became so busy taking care of everyone else that she was not maintaining holistic balance within her own lifestyle. Rest and “me-time” had to find a place alongside her responsibilities.

Learning to say no became part of learning how to lead while also caring for herself.

Empowering Women at Every Age

Fredina’s desire to help women strengthen their confidence sits at the centre of her business vision. She wants the organisation to be an agent of change, helping women gain the internal power to stay balanced through life’s challenges.

The business is uniquely rooted in empowering women of all ages to maintain healthy balance across spirit, soul and body. Fredina wants this to energise, motivate and encourage each phenomenal woman or girl “to simply be the best you possible” within her personal, professional or educational environment.

WHY?

You are a Phenomenal Woman or Girl

You endure foreseen and unforeseen challenges

You weather disappointments.

You inspire your admirers.

You cry when you’re emotional

You overcome obstacles that try to hinder your destiny and goals arrival

You offer others your love and compassion

You accept constructive criticism

Yet, ignore negative words, opinions, and actions

Your radiant smile overlooks the gossipers, backbiters, and acts of jealousy.

You calmly breathe through the road barriers

How is all this possible?

You are fearfully and wonderfully made Phenomenal Woman

Keep walking in your glow and crown of victory

“Simply being the best you possible.”

Preparing Women for What Comes Next

Projecting forward, Fredina sees a world that is rapidly growing. Emerging trends and ongoing professional opportunities in health and wellness will strengthen the need for self-confidence, self-worth and self-discipline, particularly for people pursuing personal and professional goals in an environment that keeps changing.

These qualities will remain important to the future she envisions, both for the women she serves and for the organisation she continues to build.

Learning to Agree to Disagree

Fredina’s years in leadership have also taught Fredina that working together requires humility. One lesson she considers especially important in today’s healthcare ecosystem is learning to agree to disagree with humility.

Medical personnel, customer service professionals, patients and clients all have to work together within the same environment. Each may bring a different perspective, experience or way of approaching a problem.

Fredina believes everyone has to remember that there is more than one way to plan. Making room for different approaches allows people to work together while maintaining respect for one another.

A Message About Authenticity

For aspiring CEOs, entrepreneurs, executives and emerging business leaders, Fredina returns to the belief that has accompanied her throughout her journey: “you are fearfully and wonderfully made.”

No one on this earth can replace or duplicate another person’s authenticity. Her advice is to “simply be the best you possible” while letting others be themselves.

She adds one final lesson: do not take things personally.

It is advice that brings her story back to where it began. At 12, she saw health problems affecting people she loved and decided that she and her sisters would choose another path. Decades later, that childhood decision still sits underneath her leadership.

The work has grown, the healthcare landscape has changed and technology is opening new possibilities, yet the purpose remains familiar. Help people care for their health. Help women find their confidence. Help them stay balanced when life becomes difficult. Give them room to be who they are.

For Fredina, leadership began with a simple choice: to live differently. Her life’s work has been about helping others believe they can do the same.
