India-Afghanistan T20I series fitness clearance remains uncertain

India’s preparations for the Afghanistan T20I series have raised fitness concerns after selectors included four players who are yet to receive medical clearance. Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana are all part of the squad, but their availability will depend on the final fitness tests.
The India Afghanistan T20I series fitness clearance issue has created uncertainty ahead of the three match home series. The selectors have previously backed players who were close to returning from injury, but selecting four recovering players leaves India with several positions still dependent on medical approval.
Bumrah is the biggest concern because of his importance to India’s bowling attack. He suffered a left knee injury during the second ODI against England in Cardiff in July and has not played since. His return will depend on whether he can complete the required fitness assessment before the series.
Washington’s situation is also being monitored after he picked up a hamstring injury during the England ODI series. His all-round ability gives India another option with both bat and ball, making his Jasprit Bumrah fitness update and Washington’s recovery important to the team’s balance.
Nitish Kumar Reddy missed the United Kingdom and Zimbabwe tours because of a quadriceps injury. His inclusion in the India T20I squad 2026 suggests the selectors believe he is progressing towards a return, although the final decision will come only after he clears the fitness process.
Harshit Rana has faced a longer injury setback. A knee problem required surgery and ruled him out of the T20 World Cup. He later suffered another setback during the United Kingdom tour, leaving his return dependent on another successful fitness assessment. His Washington Sundar injury situation is separate, but both recoveries highlight the fitness questions surrounding the squad.
The India Afghanistan T20I series fitness clearance will therefore be closely watched before the opening match. If any of the four fail to pass their tests, India will need to rely on alternative players already available to the selectors.
For now, the squad provides depth but not certainty. The final fitness results will determine how many of the four recovering players can actually take the field against Afghanistan.
