Nintendo will Introduce Switch Systems in Indonesia in December

Nintendo (7974.T), a Japanese gaming company, announced on Wednesday that it would introduce its Switch consoles in Indonesia for the first time this year, entering the biggest economy in Southeast Asia.

Nintendo informed Reuters via email that the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 would be released in Indonesia in December.

“Unfortunately, we have nothing further to share beside the fact ⁠that we plan to launch Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 in Indonesia this December,” the company responded when asked what its presence in Indonesia may entail.

According to a statement from Indonesia’s Ministry of Creative Economy, the consoles would be officially distributed by a subsidiary of Salim Group, one of the country’s largest corporations.

In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Indonesia’s vice-creative economy minister, Irene Umar, stated that permitting Nintendo to sell its goods thru legitimate channels will aid in addressing copyright infringement.

Irene continued, “Indonesia is pushing to make Nintendo’s developer kit available to help local developers.”

Local game developer Adam Ardisasmita told Reuters that Nintendo consoles and game cartridges are presently primarily marketed thru illegal means, making pricing processes opaque.

The state news outlet Antara quoted Axton Salim of the Salim Group as claiming that the company’s subsidiary would collaborate with Nintendo to construct an official repair center and customer support.

The Indonesian Game Association reported last year that although Indonesia has the largest gaming market in Southeast Asia, with an annual value of over 30 trillion rupiah ($1.68 billion), only about 2.5% of that expenditure is generated by local developers.

Nintendo anticipates selling 16.5 million Switch 2 hybrid home-portable consoles between June 2025 and March 2027.
