Elon Musk Says AI Must Embrace Truth

One‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ of the things Elon Musk did recently is to outline what he thinks are three “truth, beauty, and curiosity” main required elements for artificial intelligence to have a healthy future and make a significant impact.

During a conversation he contended that a serious danger ensues if AI systems are allowed to take in lies or biased facts without any challenge. Thus to prevent it, Musk implied that developers have to ensure AI always agrees with objective truth. Such honesty is the very basis of future AI systems that are trustable.

After that, he brought up the point of beauty, the human faculty to be aware of the most important things beyond reason or logic. To Musk, AI should not only be a cold computational machine but it should also understand what makes things themes, expressive or elegant. Thus, he thinks, it will be the beauty that will lead AI not only to the creation of things of utility but of value too.

In the end, curiosity. Musk believes it is good for AI to be allowed to continually learn and to always be eager to discover unknown things. Such a mindset can assist the AI to develop in a manner that will be of benefit to humans. An AI that is not curious and thus becomes stagnant, rigid, limited or narrowly-focused might be detrimental to people and incapable of coming up with original ideas.

Musk also indicated the creative potential of AI to revolutionize the media industry. He envisioned a world where movies, video games, and stories could be instantly made by AI, thus radically changing how we receive entertainment and art.

Agree with Musk or not, his idea offers a human-centered alternative to AI that is solely based on data and scale. It is a call to create AI that is not only strong but also considerate and having the virtues that matter at its ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌core.
