Key Highlights

  • The Jio Platforms share listing came in 21.3% above the issue price.
  • The stock closed 4.5% above its listing price, at Rs 1,419.
  • Jio’s market cap of Rs 13.1 lakh crore compares with Airtel’s Rs 12.2 lakh crore.

What Happened?
The Jio Platforms share listing valued the company at around Rs 12.5 lakh crore, in line with the 20-25% premium analysts had expected from grey-market prices. Mukesh Ambani, Akash Ambani (Jio’s MD), Anant Ambani, Isha Ambani and Nita Ambani attended the ceremony. Reliance Industries shares ended 3.2% lower at Rs 1,158, Bharti Airtel fell 1.6%, and the Nifty 50 closed 0.2% down after dropping over 1% during the day.

Why is it Important?
The Jio IPO was first announced in mid-2025 and aimed to raise Rs 30,213 crore entirely through a fresh issue. Jio now ranks ahead of Airtel, its biggest rival, by market capitalisation.

Impact and Implications
Public investors can now trade a company whose valuation sits above its closest telecom competitor’s. On listing day, Reliance Industries and Airtel both ended lower in a weak market.

What Happens Next?

Akash Ambani called the IPO a “starting line.” He said the first decade democratised data and the next will focus on AI, cloud, connected devices and satellite connectivity. The report doesn’t say how the proceeds will be used.
